King William II of England - William Rufus
King William II of England - William Rufus William II was also known as: Wlliam Rufus, the Red (in French, Guillaume Le Roux), though he may not have been known by this name during his lifetime. He was also identified by the nickname Longsword, given to him in childhood. William II was known for: His violent rule and his suspicious death. Williams forceful tactics earned him a reputation for cruelty and led to extreme dissatisfaction among the nobility. This has caused some scholars to theorize that he was assassinated.à Occupations: KingMilitary Leader Places of Residence and Influence: Britain: EnglandFrance Important Dates: Born: c. 1056Crowned King of England: Sept. 26, 1087Died: Aug. 2, 1100 About William II: A younger son of William the Conqueror, upon his fathers death William II inherited the crown of England while his elder brother Robert received Normandy. This caused immediate turbulence among those who thought it best that the Conquerors territory remain united under one rule. However, William was able to crush the rebellion of those seeking to put Robert in charge. Several years later, he had to put down a revolt by English noblemen. William also had trouble with the clergy, most especially Anselm, who he appointed Archbishop of Canterbury, and earned the enmity of Anselms supporters, some of whom later wrote chronicles casting the king in a bad light. In any case he was much more interested in military matters than clerical issues, and saw successes in Scotland, Wales and, eventually, Normandy.à In spite of the friction William seemed to spark throughout his reign, he managed to keep the political ties between England and Normandy strong. Unfortunately for him, he was killed in a hunting accident when he was only in his 40s. Although theories still circulate that he was murdered by his younger brother, who followed him to the throne as Henry I, there is no strong evidence to support this hypothesis, which on close inspection seems fairly unlikely. How to Cancel Your SAT Scores
How to Cancel Your SAT Scores SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips What can you do if you took the SAT already but you decide you want to cancel your test scores? First, stop and take a step back. Ask yourself if youââ¬â¢re sure. Once you cancel your test scores, there's no going back. Second, figure out - can you still cancel your scores? CollegeBoard has a very strict deadline about this and if you miss that deadline, then they won't budge. So what can you do? Well, I'm here tohelp you 1) assess whether you should cancel; 2) know what steps you need to take to cancel; and 3) know what to do if you miss the deadline to cancel, but still need to deal with a poor score. Why are you canceling? Should you really do this? You may have felt unsure about your answers, or you may have taken longer than the people around you to complete the test and are worried that you did poorly. However, keep in mind that everyone feels bad coming out of a test. For tests as long as the SAT, it's best not to make an impulsive decision about canceling. If you cancel your test, then you are probably going to have to take it again. Besides, it's possible that you did better than you thought you did. This is very common! But you have to keep in mind - once you cancel your test scores, you can't take it back.Know that there are other options. Score Choice is one such deal, where you can choose which scores you send to colleges, so your low scores won't necessarily have the terrible impact you think it will. However, some schools do require that "all scores" be sent out, so its important to consider where your top choice schools fall on this list. Take a look atWhich Colleges Superscore the SAT to find out! There is another option as well - you can cancel the free score reports so that they don't go out! This way, you don't have to cancel your scores ahead of time, and you can decide whether anyone else sees them. Until then, you are the only one who will. I talk about this topic more in the last section of this article, so make sre you check that out. So, basically, you have a lot of options. But you still don't know what to decide? In cases like these, I would recommend you carefully go over the checklist we provided below. If you answer YES to any of the questions in the checklist, then you may want to consider canceling. But if you answer no, then what you should really do is step away, and wait for the results, knowing that you did the best you could have that day. CHECKLIST: When should you consider cancelingyour score? You panicked while taking the test and missed a lot of questions You ran out of time repeatedly and could not complete one or more sections Your equipment malfunctioned [your calculator spazzed or ran out of batteries, your pencils all broke and there was no sharpener and it turned out they weren't #2 anyway] You were sick during the test Something happened during the test that you found disruptive [there was construction outside, someone in the room had a medical emergency, etc.] and this really shook up your performance You were late to your test [because of transportation, you woke up late, etc] and because of that you've been distracted the whole time You top choice college is one that requires you to send in all your scores, and does not allow Score Choice You are 100% sure that you filled in your answer circles wrong on an entire section or more (Note: This is possible to fix with Hand Score Grading, $55, by CollegeBoard - check out our article on it here.) You fell asleep during the test If you answer YES to any of the questions on the Checklist above, and you know you want to cancel, then you need to go through the steps outlined below. What steps should you take to cancel your SAT score? At the test center, immediately after the test Ask the test supervisor for a Request to Cancel Test Scores form Complete the form and sign in Return the form to the test supervisor before leaving the test center If you decide to cancel after leaving the test center You must submit a written request to CollegeBoard by :59 PM EST on the Wednesday after the test You cannot submit test score cancellation requests by phone or email because your signature is required. Yes, itââ¬â¢s a hassle, but it is necessary so that they know it's not someone trying to maliciously erase your test. You need the following information: The SAT Request to Cancel Test Scores form found here The test date The test center number The name of the test you are canceling(either SAT or SAT Subject Test) Your signature (required) Remember, once you submit a request to cancel your scores, your scores cannot be reinstated under any circumstances and will not be reported to you or any of the institutions you selected. IMPORTANT: What's the SAT Cancellation Deadline? You must cancel no later than :59 PM EST on the Wednesday following the test date. The only exception is students with disabilities. Because of the extended school testing window, students with disabilities who test in school based testing have until the Monday, 1 week after the published test date to cancel their scores. How to Send in Your Request: By Fax: 610-290-8978 By Overnight delivery with USPS Express Mail: SAT Score Cancellation P.O. Box 6228 Princeton NJ, 08541-6228 By FedEx, UPS, other Overnight Mail Delivery: SAT Score Cancellation 1425 Lower Ferry Road Ewing NJ, 08618 NOTE: The mailing or Fax label should read ATTENTION: SAT Score Cancellation What if you miss the deadline? What can you do? Option 1: Accept what CollegeBoard says and be sad According to CollegeBoard, if you wait until after the deadline, then there's nothing you can do. Your score will become a part of your permanent record Option 2: Be Clever! You can use Score Choice to prevent universities from seeing your bad score. You can make changes to your score recipients easily in your My SAT Account. You can change these recipients until :59 PM EST on the Monday one week after your scheduled test date. If for some reason you cannot delete score recipients altogether, change the recipients to colleges you aren't interested in; some college will get your score, but your chances with your top-choice colleges won't be damaged. Note: if you remove score recipients but then later learn that you did very well, then you will need to pay $10.50 per school to send those results. However, if that's the price you pay for some peace of mind, then it might be worth it. If you decide to cancel, then be prepared for that possible expense. Basically, if you act within a week, after the initial deadline to cancel your scores, there are still ways to keep your scores from getting to your top-choice schools! What's Next? Levels of Prevention Paper (Primary Health Prevention levels by Essay
Levels of Prevention Paper (Primary Health Prevention levels by Community Health Nurses) - Essay Example Health relates to ensuring the optimal level of well-being in the individual. In the homeless this relates to ensuring that they are as well protected from the effects which being homeless may have on their health as possible. The nursing paradigm relates to the use of the skills of the community nurse in creating and maintaining a relationship with the individual as well as offering appropriate treatment and care. Taking these four metaparadigms into account, primary prevention would be considered to be an effective community health care strategy to use with the homeless. Primary prevention relates to the interventions which the community nurse creates to prevent risk behaviors before they start. In the case of the homeless aggregate this pertains to preventing behaviors which may put the homeless personââ¬â¢s health and well being at risk in order to maintain this at the optimal levels possible given the situation. This could also be considered in terms of maintaining the fourteen areas of nursing care as established by Henderson in the Interactive model of nursing (Tourville and Ingalls, 2003). This framework can be seen in Appendix 1. Primary prevention will be achieved through health promotion and education and health protection in line with this framework, focusing in preventing any behavior which may compromise the elements of the framework. The importance of primary prevention is that it is independent of diagnosis (Wenger, 2006). This means that it is an accessible form of health care, making it particularly suitable for those groups who m ay resist diagnosis, as may be the case for some subgroups of the homeless. This step of primary prevention focuses on the development of accessible health education programs for the homeless. This focuses on using education to prevent any behaviors which may put the health of the individual at risk, such as heavy alcohol consumption, unprotected sex and other risky behaviors. The strategies

Kotter 7 and 8 - Essay Example ain factors: defined time duration of the project; performance integrity which emphasizes the capabilities of team member; commitment towards goals; and extra effort that employees must make to adopt changes. They believe that progress of projects needs to be monitored regularly to identify bottlenecks for early corrective measures. Article corroborates with the viewpoints of Kotter who believes that regular monitoring of projects ensures that changes are better accepted as part of work routine and consolidates them within the organizational culture. Haddadââ¬â¢s article, on the other hand promotes integration of technology within the organizational processes. I agree with author who contends that technology helps to improves efficiency for higher productivity. The strategic partnership approach of author validates the use technology as it promotes the organizational goals for successful outcome. Kotterââ¬â¢s strategy establishes eight key stages for implementing change: sense of urgency; guiding coalition; create vision; communicate vision; empower short term goals; consolidate change; institutionalize new approach (Kotter, 1998). These are critical parameters that reaffirm Haddadââ¬â¢s strategic partnership to embrace technology for optimal performance. (words; 253) In the article, ââ¬ËWhy Change Programs Donââ¬â¢t Produce changeââ¬â¢ by Beer et al., has raised critical issue of change that must start from the bottom and needs to be supported by the top management to make changes effective and long lasting. They assert that often the change is initiated by the top management without inputs from the employees and therefore fails to become effective. Employeesââ¬â¢ participation is vital to make changes effective. Employeesââ¬â¢ participation becomes key success factor when change is effectively communicated with defined vision. People become committed to goals when they understand change and accept responsibility for their role to implement them. This is one of the most

Chilean Copper Mine Collapse Essay Example for Free
Chilean Copper Mine Collapse Essay On August 5, 2010 at San Jose mine in northern Chile a cave collapsed trapping 33 miners more than 2000-feet underground (Weik, n. d. ). This should have been just another day, a normal 12-hour shift at work, but it instead it turned into a 69 day nightmare. Minors did not know it would be the last time for nearly two months they would see the light of day. Miners, much like fire fighters and policemen, know there is a risk in the work they do. Their families also know that there is a risk and accept that someday they may get a call with bad news. Knowing this and seeing it happen are two different things. Communicating with the Families and Employees The families are from different backgrounds and different nationalities this should be taken into consideration when communicating with them. Minera San Esteban Primera would want to have several people involved in communication plan that involved constant communication with families as well as their employees. Some of the people involved with communications should be the same nationality and speak the same language to get the message across as well as make the families feel somewhat at ease. This will help the families feel as though someone understands them and their culture because they are from the same backgrounds. Communication should be organized and planned. The families from other places, not local, should be put up in a hotel with a meeting place provided where the families can come for regular updates. This will relieve some stress from the families having to wait by the phone for updates, and for the company getting calls unexpectedly or at the wrong time. This place could serve a dual function as a place where families can go and seek empathy with other families, Minera San Esteban Primera should communicate in-person with the families as much as possible. They should provide updates via phone calls with set times to call. Electronic communication would be for faster if the families have access to this type of information. Other considerations are the employees who may have family members who are trapped. It is common in a work environment like this to have several members of one family working for the same company. Other employees may be minors who called in sick that day or were assigned to different projects. Minera San Esteban Primera will need to consider how they talk to employees to be sure sensitive information is not out before it should be. Some employees who have to work around the clock to make sure everything is taken care of. The families and employees need to know that their employer will do everything they can to help the miners as fast as they can. They should hold small to the point staff meetings to provide updates to the employees (Aniisu, n. d. ). They could even have a room where employees can come and watch for updates as they become available. The country came together suggesting ideas on how to get to the miners. It was important to ascertain if the miners were alive, to see if rescue was possible. Chilean government reached out to NASA for the assistance in communicating with the miners and could get lines of communication going. Once the Chilean authorities could confirm that they were all alive, the vital information had to get to the families and to the employees (Condon, 2010). Once communication lines were set up, family members were allowed to talk briefly to their trapped miners (Tabor, n. d. ). Even though it was only one minute, it was essential for the family to see that the minors were fine and no one was lied to. This also helped the minersââ¬â¢ mental state and encouraged them to stay strong until rescued. The employees were able to see live feed of the miners that helped them to feel as though Minera San Esteban Primera, NASA, and the Chilean government were, in fact, doing everything they could do to save the miners. As further mining operations were bound to happen employees would feel confident that their company would do what was necessary to ensure their wellbeing in the event of another collapse. Post-Traumatic Stress In Relation To Holden Caulfield Essay example --
Post-Traumatic Stress In Relation To Holden Caulfield Introduction à à à à à Throughout life, an individual may endure emotionally and physically straining moments causing the person to become downhearted, and or irate. These feelings are normal, but may however become a problem when these feelings prohibit someone from living a ââ¬Ënormalââ¬â¢ life. An estimated 5.2 million American adults ages 18 to 54, or approximately 3.6 percent of people in this age group in a given year, have PTSD (Narrow, Rae, Regier). This purpose of this report is to prove whether or not Holden Caulfield, the main character of J.D. Salingersââ¬â¢s book The Catcher In The Rye, is depressed. What Is A Depressive Disorder? Depression is a serious medical illness that negatively affects how a person conducts him/herself, and the way he/she think. Depression may include anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders, manic depressions. People with a depressive illness cannot merely ââ¬Ëpull themselves togetherââ¬â¢ and get better. About 5% of the population will have some form of a mental illness at some point in their lives. Half of these people will also have a substance abuse Whorpole 2 problem, according to statistics from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, or NAMI. What is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)? Difficult situations are a part of life, and people everywhere must cope with difficult circumstances such as conflict in out lives. See Appendix 1 (Depression). But occasionally, people experience an event, which is so unexpected that it continues to have serious affects, long after it has happened. Like depression in general these events may include a traumatic event involving actual or threatened death to themselves or others. Also learning that a close friend is in danger or has died can cause this type of anxiety disorder (What Is A Depressive Disorder?). This condition is one of several known as an anxiety disorder. One significant event in Holdenââ¬â¢s life that is a factor for his mental illness is the death of his brother Allie. When Holden found out, ââ¬Å"[He] was only thirteen and they were going to have [him] psychoanalyzed and all, the night [Allie] died, and [he] broke all the windows with [his] fist, just for the hell of itâ⬠(Salinger 39). Holdenââ¬â¢s brother died of leukemia and at the time he did not know how to properly deal with the situatio... ...work hard on it, because as of now, he is always talking about Allie as if he was still alive. There has also been a good deal of research on the use of medications for adults with PTSD, including research on the formation of emotionally charged memories and medications that may help block the development of symptoms (Gold, McCarty 151-62). Medications appear to be useful in reducing overwhelming symptoms of arousal (such as sleep disturbances and an exaggerated startle reflex), intrusive thoughts, and avoidance; reducing accompanying conditions such as depression and panic; and improving impulse control and related behavioral problems. The incomparable solution for Holden would be a combination of the two, psychotherapy and medication. One should not rely on just medication, because then the risk of addiction increases. If medication and psychotherapy and being used, the person will become more able to cope with the situations that the person may face, on their own. Conclusion à à à à à The report was to prove that Holden Caulfield of J.D. Salingersââ¬â¢s book The Catcher In The Rye, is depressed. POINTS TO SUMMARISE REPORT: - - - - - - - CONCLUDING STATEMENT

Michael Jackson The King Of Pop
In the 80's he was a legend, I suppose he still is as his music is still very popular. But when your own son is hanging outside a balcony looking straight down on a 30-foot drop. You have to ask yourself. ââ¬Å"What was he thinking?â⬠Before you ask your self such a bizarre question we must remember what Michael is really renowned for: His mind-blowing music, his talent to write and produce his own music and his ability to indulge any women's heart with his magical lyrics. Here's a bit on how he was to be known as a musical legend. By 1982, Michael Jackson was riding high, having enjoyed a solo smash, and continuing to record and tour with The Jackson's. That was all to change when Michael and Quincy Jones returned to the studio to record what would become the biggest-selling album of all time: Thriller. Crafting a perfect mixture of pop and R&B. Michael and Quincy set out to make a record containing nothing but hit singles. With over-the-top videos for ââ¬Å"Billie Jean,â⬠ââ¬Å"Beat Itâ⬠and the masterpiece short film ââ¬Å"Thriller,â⬠Michael became the first black artist to have a video played on TV. Eventually selling over 26 million copies in the US and winning 8 Grammies, Thriller became the international phenomenon of the '80's. When I first heard a few of his songs from his album ââ¬Å"thrillerâ⬠, I thought, ââ¬Å"What's all the fuss about?â⬠he was just a normal guy promoting a new album. After hearing his songs over and over I was finally captivated by his unique melodies and the realism of his lyrics. My opinion on Michael was about to change. Who knew he'd get addicted to plastic surgery, face accusations of paedophilia, and end up Americas most famous sideshow. It wasn't until 1993 that he suffered serious damage to his image. Jackson was accused of child abuse by a teenage friend, sparking major media frenzy. Through it all, Michael denied the accusations. You just knew the media had to destroy him before he could get better at what he did. I couldn't believe such a talent; such a fascination in modern day would be interrupted by such peculiar accusations. To everyone, he became famous for changing his face every time you'd see him on TV or in the newspaper. I was crushed; his music was so inspiring and joyful, now his music was a disgrace, he'd set a poor example after such a success in his music and lifestyle. I think his real appraisal would be that despite all his problems he was still able to provide his fans with more hit singles and more best selling albums. This is why he was to be known as a legend. He wasn't always best at interviews but his reputation did the talking. He didn't forget his lost fan as one of the singles on his new album (The lost children) reflects his feeling on how important it is to gain trust from his fans. One day I came down the stairs and noticed Michaels new album ââ¬Å"invincibleâ⬠was laying there on the table. I listened to his music and realised that he had lost his talent. The inspiring lyrics were gone, the catchy tunes were gone and his fame for writing great music had broken down. Michael was a changed man and so were his fans, the only music Michael would be renowned for was his album ââ¬Å"thrillerâ⬠and all his number one hits in the 80's and 90's. Intelligently Michael realised this himself and released the album with all his best songs and number one hits. He named it ââ¬Å"The best of Michael Jacksonâ⬠. Not having this album was a sin; his best music written was compiled in this one album. The album was a dream to most of his fans. Michael stayed low for a while; most of his time was spent in court. First signs that Michael had turned insane were when he didn't arrive at one of his court cases. His excuse was that a spider bit him. ââ¬Å"It is a spider bite,â⬠Jackson told reporters. ââ¬Å"It is real bad. If I showed it to you, you'd be shocked. It hurts very much right now as I speak.â⬠Apart from the spider bite Michael again was in the spotlight for an outrageous attempt to dangle his baby from a balcony. ââ¬Å"It is a clear-cut case of child endangerment,â⬠reporters wrote of the baby-dangling incident. ââ¬Å"In addition to the obvious physical danger the child was in, he is also living in psychological danger with Michael as his single parent.â⬠All was going very bad for Michael. Being a fan of Michael Jackson was now a disgrace. He started his career as a superstar famous for his talented work in the studio. It ended on allegations that he is a bad single parent and his own baby should be taken from him. Things cannot get any worse for Michael; his reputation had taken a major blow. Despite everything that happened to Michael, his music and albums would be locked away safely and described as probably the best and most talented music ever heard. A few days later Michael was asked in court. ââ¬Å"What were you thinking when your own son is hanging out a balcony being held in one hand?â⬠Michael replied ââ¬Å"Ummâ⬠¦. He's my sonâ⬠the audience couldn't stop laughing.

Gone with the Wind and Feminism
Gone with the Wind and Feminism Posted by Miriam Bale on Sat, Mar 13, 2010 at 1:38 PM [pic] Molly Haskell, author ofFrankly, My Dear, will introduceGone with the Wind at Film Forum on Sunday afternoon. Gone with the Wind plays this weekend in Film Forumââ¬â¢s Victor Fleming festival, but is it really a Fleming film?Uber-producer David Selznick is the most consistent author, and Selznick doppelganger George Cukor directed a significant amount of scenes, giving this domestic war film some moments more delicate and subtle than anything else in Flemingââ¬â¢s oeuvre (and after macho Fleming was brought on replace the openly gay Cukor at Clark Gableââ¬â¢s urging, the ââ¬Å"womenââ¬â¢s directorâ⬠went on to coach Vivien Leigh and Olivia de Havilland on weekends, at their insistence, throughout the shoot); and Vivien Leigh gives a scarily mercurial performance in almost every scene, owning the film entirely. At the time of the filmââ¬â¢s release, Frank Nugent in the New Y ork Times wrote, ââ¬Å"Is it the greatest motion picture ever made? Probably not, although it is the greatest motion mural we have ever seen. â⬠Itââ¬â¢s a mural made by many hands, and the esteemed critic Molly Haskellââ¬â¢s latest book, Frankly My Dear: Gone with the Wind Revisited does a fabulous job of parsing out the contributions. She reveals nuggets like Howard Hawksââ¬â¢ supposed uncredited contribution in rewriting some of the dialogue in the last section, the battle of the sexes showdown between Rhett and Scarlett, which helps make sense why this particular section feels like an entirely different film from the historical romance of Part 1. Another uncredited writer was F. Scott Fitzgerald; Haskell's digging suggests that what he eliminated from the film may be as important as what anyone else contributed. She also describes writer Ben Hecht maintaining as a point-of-pride that he had never nor never would read the mass-market epic romance on which the film wa s basedââ¬âso Selznick and Fleming stayed up all night on a diet of speed and peanuts acting out the story for him (with Selznick as Scarlett and Fleming playing Melanie). Haskellââ¬â¢s book also focuses on the one-hit-wonder novelist Margaret Mitchell, telling the ascinating history of this flapper-turned-frumpy matron who rebelled against her serious, feminist southern belle of a mother by becoming a connoisseur and practitioner of frivolity as an art. As Mitchellââ¬â¢s background might suggest, Gone with the Wind is a complicated universe for a feminist to tackle. And yet this is exactly the sort of conflicted, non-PC and pre-Second Wave world of women that Haskell has consistently celebrated and examined through films, serving a unique and crucial role in American feminism. As Haskell describes this position in connection to a 1972 panel she took part in on women in film, in which Gloria Steinem deplored the scenes in Gone with the Wind of Scarlett Oââ¬â¢Hara squeeze d into a corset and Haskell then rose to defend that character as a courageous survivor: ââ¬Å"Both of our reactions were in their own way, right. But this difference of perspective was also an early augur of the fault lines in feminism or perhaps a necessary split focus: between those predisposed to see and proclaim signs of the victimization of women in a benighted world now progressing toward enlightenment and equality and those inclined to be heartened by the contradictionsââ¬âthe women in the past (both real and fictional) whoââ¬â¢d held their own in a chauvinist culture, whoââ¬â¢d subverted the norms and gained victories not always apparent through a literal reading of the plot. Of course, just as Gone with the Wind is both tricky and rich personal territory for a southern-raised feminist like Haskell to examine, it is also difficultââ¬âeven in coverage this briefââ¬âfor a black feminist like myself to look at honestly. Gone with the Wind is unarguably, painf ully racist, yet extraordinarily valuable for examining just how and why.The film displays insipid white stereotypes in some of the minor characters as much as it does obscenely destructive black ones, and yet the main characters Rhett and Scarlett seem to exist outside of this orbit, beyond expectations of both gender or race; identification with these two characters is widespread and complex, by all races. Just as Selznickââ¬â¢s Duel in the Sun inspired Laura Mulvey to overhaul her views on female identification, GWTW is ripe for looking at where racial identification splits and falls in this film, even after Haskellââ¬â¢s sharp, thorough and artfully written book has covered so uch intellectual and historic territory. Haskell will be on hand at 3pm screening at Film Forum on Sunday to introduce this problematic and fascinating piece of film history. Sheââ¬â¢ll also be signing copies of her book, a coup of single-work film criticism that is highly intelligent, personal an d never relies on jargon or cliches. Besides her unique and crucial role in American feminism, Haskell is also one of the best writers on film in America, and both as a critic and stylist sheââ¬â¢s only getting better. Molly Haskellââ¬â¢s Feminist Take on Gone with the Wind y Melissa Silverstein on March 2, 2009 in Books Molly Haskell is the shit when it comes to writing about womenââ¬â¢s films with a feminist perspective. There is no one better. Her book From Reverence to Rape: The Treatment of Women in the Movies is one of the best books about women in film and it was written in the 70s. (There is an a[pic]dditional chapter that covers the 70s and 80s in the paperback. ) That just goes to show you how few books have critically looked at this issue (from a non-academic perspective. Haskell has taken on one of the most beloved films Gone with the Wind in her new book Frankly My Dear which is out now. The book has gotten stellar reviews and including in the NY Times this wee kend. Haskellââ¬â¢s argument is mounted on feminist principles that at first glance seem antithetical to a film widely regarded as prefeminist fluff. She contends that ââ¬Å"themes centering on womenâ⬠are ââ¬Å"always an inferior subject matter to socially conscious critics of literature and film. â⬠After 70 years of ââ¬Å"GWTWâ⬠bashing, a creditable critic finally says, ââ¬Å"Not so fast! Haskell gave up regular reviewing in the early ââ¬â¢90s, leaving criticism that seriously examined the big-screen image of women and the popular representation of female social roles to go underground ââ¬â into academic studies where abstruse, tenure-seeking jargon is used to rebuff popular taste. That makes ââ¬Å"Frankly, My Dearâ⬠all the more remarkable. Itââ¬â¢s Haskellââ¬â¢s feminist perspective that provides insight into a movie most academics wonââ¬â¢t touch and current critics dismiss. She disentangles the filmââ¬â¢s qualities from the conf ounding issues of misogyà ny, racism and intellectual snobbery.

Pulp Fiction Essays - English-language Films, Miramax Films, Films
Pulp Fiction Essays - English-language Films, Miramax Films, Films Pulp Fiction David Skreiner [emailprotected] Pulp Fiction To all you people: Film studies isn't yet a widely accepted field at my University yet (Karl-Franzens-University in Graz, Austria, Europe). This paper was written for a seminar (something like a third-year course or so) and you might want to rewrite it to fit your own school's idea of what a film analysis should look like. Also, watch out for unusual sentences; I'm not a native speaker so some minor errors or weird expressions may have found their way into this paper. I think it got an "A", or a "B" grade (don't remember exactly). Dave Term Paper: Seminar "Violence in American Literature and Film" Prof. Dr. Arno Heller Winter Semester 1995/96 1 Table of Contents 1 TABLE OF CONTENTS 2 PLOT, STORY AND STYLE 2.1 DEFINITION 2.2 CHRONOLOGY 2.3 CIRCULARITY 2.4 VIOLENCE IN PULP FICTION: PLOT STRUCTURE AND NARRATIVE STYLE 2.5 CINEMATIC STYLE 2.6 CONSIDERATIONS OF GENRE 2.7 MISE-EN-SCENE 3 TARANTINO'S WORLD 3.1 TARANTINO'S CINEMA 3.2 INTERTEXTUAL ASPECTS OF PULP FICTION 3.3 TARANTINO'S AESTHETICS 3.4 TARANTINO CHARACTERS 3.5 VIOLENCE 3.6 POPULAR CULTURE 3.7 REDEMPTION 4 BIBLIOGRAPHY 2 Plot, Story and Style 2.1 Definition When considering plot and story, I will stick to the convention of using plot for the film's contents - what we are presented on the screen - and story for the whole of the events we are presented and the events or facts that are relevant to them. This distinction is important because, as will be shown later, Pulp Fiction's plot leaves out some aspects of the story, and leaves us to imply or simply guess at several loose ends in the story as a whole1. 2.2 Chronology The plot of Pulp Fiction is not linear; it does not follow the chronological order of events. Rather, the story presented to the audience consists of three distinct - and very much interwoven - plot lines. The three plot lines are presented to us in 'acts' or 'chapters' mixed together, complete with chapter titles: "Vincent Vega and Marsellus Wallace's Wife", "The Gold Watch" and "The Bonnie Situation". Several elements are consistent in all of the sub-plots; for instance, Vincent Vega and the figure of gangster boss Marsellus Wallace (or at least his influence) are present throughout the film. Overall, the effect of the unusual structuring seems similar to browsing a pulp novel one already knows, reading the 'good bits' for amusement and skipping the rest - which might be the very intention of the film maker. Not only are there numerous references to pulp films and books, but we also see Vincent Vega reading a pulp novel in the film. Certainly, the film has been designed to be a success, and its title may be seen as a referral to the genre of "pulp novels" as well as a self-description. 2.3 Circularity Like many classical films, Pulp Fiction has a noticeable circularity to it. Todorov's explanation of the typical linear plot2 (plenitude, where everything is satisfactory, peaceful, calm, or at least recognizably normal - plenitude disturbed by some threatening power or force - action of a force directed against disturbing force - restoration of plenitude) is not really circular, for although the final point resembles the beginning in its stability, they are not really the same. The circularity found in Pulp Fiction - the film ends with a continuation of its very first scene - is purely structural, while the story itself has hardly any noticeably circular elements: Most of the strands of the story end with the main characters getting killed or leaving town. The film keeps referring back to itself, presenting chains of causes-and-effects in a jumbled, non-temporal and seemingly illogical order. With the exception of very few continuity mistakes, though, the plot is based on a logicall y consistent story. Tarantino's possible reasons for having changed the order of events will have to be discussed later. 2.4 Violence in Pulp Fiction: Plot Structure and Narrative Style Pulp Fiction's plot deliberately leaves out certain aspects of the story (as a whole), so that we are left guessing at parts of it. The plot's nonchronological construction also disrupts many of the story's otherwise plausible cause-and-effect chains, and places the film's closing scene somewhere in the middle of the narrative. It is, however, not the action or the plot which creates the suspense and weird appeal that this film has, but the characters in the film - in other words,

How to quit your job and actually travel the world
How to quit your job and actually travel the world No matter how much you like your job, chances are youââ¬â¢ve spent some time daydreaming about what it would be like to walk into your bossââ¬â¢s office, quit on the spot, and then put all your energy into traveling and enjoying the world. But actually doing it may not be as crazy as it sounds! If the wanderlust is getting stronger than ever, then maybe you should think about how you can make this daydream happen. Letââ¬â¢s look at some of the first steps you can take toward becoming a professional globetrotter. Be realistic about your finances.Unfortunately, the nonstarter for many of us is that the money will run out eventually- and you really donââ¬â¢t want that to happen while youââ¬â¢re stranded halfway across the world. If youââ¬â¢re thinking about making your travel goals happen, make sure you have a strong savings gameà and a very specific budget for your new Bohemian lifestyle. And itââ¬â¢s never too early to start your financial prep- start cutting ba ck on things now to help you build your travel savings account. Only set out when you have enough for your adventuresà plus a hefty cushion for emergencies and easing your way back into real life once your travel adventures are over.Start hoarding vacation days.If youââ¬â¢re serious about quitting your job sometime in the near future, start saving up your vacation days. Most companies will pay you for unused vacation time when you leave your job. And if you have vacation time that accrues throughout the year (instead of being available all at once), plan your big resignation date for a point when youââ¬â¢ll have maximum time accrued. The key here is to think long-term. When youââ¬â¢re exploring job options, if travel is ideally in your future you should negotiate vacation time/accrual into your contract. Even if you canââ¬â¢t get a salary bump, an extra week of vacation could be just as valuable for your future jet-setting.Find ways to make extra cash on everyday activ ities. There are a lot of loyalty programs, credit card incentive programs, and other everyday tools that give consumers money or points back when they use a card or service. If you have access to these programs (like Ebates), take advantage of them. You should also consider getting (or using) cards with strong rewards or cash-back programs for money spent on travel or hospitality. Travel sites like Hotels.com or Expedia.com also tend to have rewards programs, awarding points that can be redeemed for more travel.Live like a local.Staying in four-star hotels around the globe sounds fantastic, but for most people itââ¬â¢s not terribly realistic. If you want to maximize your travel budget, look into local options for ââ¬Å"couchsurfingâ⬠or Airbnb-type programs. However- and I canââ¬â¢t emphasize this enough- always do your research to make sure youââ¬â¢re using reputable services that have policies in place to ensure your own safety and security. If you plan financially, and think realistically about your means, a globetrotting existence can be the ultimate alternative to the workday grind. Once you start putting in the work of planning and researching your new life, you may find that itââ¬â¢s far more attainable than you ever thought possible!

Energy policy and technology (Energy in developing countries, Research Proposal
Energy policy and technology (Energy in developing countries, Thailand) - Research Proposal Example Thailand is one of the developing countries in Southeast Asia that has set a good example by introducing policies (Buranasajjawaraporn, 2014) that promote and support the production of clean energy; however, preliminary literature review (Beerepoot, Laosiripojana, Sujjakulnukij, Tippichai, & Kamsamrong, 2013) identified a few problems in its policies and structures that might create hurdles in the future. Due to this potential of Thailand to emerge as one of the leaders in solar energy production and consumption, the proposed study intends to analyse some of the significant aspects of renewable energy industry of Thailand. The Ministry of Energy of Thailand (2002) has indicated its interest in promoting not only the consumption but also the production of solar energy several times, which is also evident from introduction of various incentives and promotional policies. In this regard, the matter of solar energy is of prime importance for the government, as well as for private stakeholders that are interested in investing in the potential industry. Due to this significance, identification and analysis of barriers associated with production of solar energy resources will be helpful for policymakers, as well as investors in not only understanding the problems but also resolving these barriers for successful implementation of governmentââ¬â¢s policies and achieving the target of 10-years alternative energy development plan of 2011-2021 (Buranasajjawaraporn, 2012). For this purpose, this study aims to investigate different aspects of Thailandââ¬â¢s solar industry with intent to identify and analyse its potential along with barriers that are causing hurdles for the government to promote renewable energy production and consumption in the country. Particularly, the study will attempt to fulfill the following research objectives: Brief review of literature

Iphone Demand and Supply Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Iphone Demand and Supply - Research Paper Example The entire process includes a transaction and involves the exchange of goods and services for money. This paper helps to discuss and provide an insight into how demand and supply has changed the world in the present modern era with the help of electronics, in specific, the iPhone. This phone has become a phenomenon in the world today, however a news article talks about how the demand outstrips the supply in China for this particular commodity and how that has affected the people at a micro economic level in the country. China Unicom Ltd. Said that it was not being able to meet the demand for iPhones in China with an equal level of supply because of the excess in quantity that has been demanded by the people there. The iPhone is no longer a good that falls under the category of luxury goods because this very fact that its demand is growing day by day, shows that the people are easily able to afford the same and want to purchase it at the price that it has launched at. According to the company, an estimated 200,000 iPhones were pre ordered the very day that the phone went on sale in the country (from the USA) and another 400,000 were sold on that day. The company was able to attract so many buyers because of the popularity that the phone had gained over the Chinese market because of the sale of its previous model, which had further excited a wider consumer base. Even though the phones are more expensive, they offer better features as well as data services which have attracted such a wide consumer base. In economic terms, it is clear and evident that this particular phone has appealed a great deal to at least half of the Chinese market because more and more people have bought it at the price at which it was launched. The iPad was also released in China and went on sale at a fast pace as well. However, the crux of the matter remained that the iPhoneââ¬â¢s demand exceeded the supply that the company was able to give to the people. This goes to show that there was an extension of demand in the particular commodity at the same or even higher price. Since the iPhone 4 was costlier than the previous version, an extension (and not just an increase) in demand can be noticed here in economic terms which means that there is movement along the demand curve where the sale and purchase of iPhones in China are concerned. As per the article, ââ¬Å"As of the second quarter, Apple was the fifth-largest smart phone vendor in China with 7.1% of shipments, according to Beijing research firm Analysys International.à Nokiaà Corp. had the largest share with 26.7%.â⬠this very statement helps in understanding the kind of consumer base that Apple has created for itself in China; and that even in deep cut throat competition, the company has been able to sustain its position in the Chinese market, which can be seen when the demand for the phones exceeded the supply level. In a nutshell, the concepts of supply and demandà can be viewed with the help of u nderstanding the
